With this objective in mind, in 2021, we launched the Renove Program a joint effort with our partners to measure the carbon balance of cattle suppliers. In partnership with renowned institutions, three projects are being developed in South America, which currently have 91 properties participating.
For the development of these projects, we are using primary data and internationally recognized methodologies to ensure soundness and scientific credibility. This way, we can contribute to the recognition of the sustainability of South American cattle ranching.
How does the Renove Program work?
The sustainable development of the property can be encompassed within our various projects:
Implementation of sustainable management practices such as pasture reform, waste management, Crop-Livestock-Forest Integration (ILPF) or Crop-Livestock Integration (ILP).
Agricultural Management
Restoration of legal reserve areas or permanent preservation areas.
Forest Restoration
Existence of excess legal reserve on the property.

Technical Partnerships
The Renove Program works alongside renowned South American institutions including Embrapa and Imaflora to warrant the use of known and internationally credible methodologies, scientific backing, and innovation.

Training and Technical Assistance
Training and technical assistance are fundamental to ensure the proper application and maintenance of best practices over time. The Program supports partnerships and rural extension activities, technology transfer and training so that rural technicians and cattle ranchers are provided with the necessary tools and know-how.

Green Finance
Access to special financial credit for cattle ranchers engaged in sustainable livestock production is essential to ensure the widespread adoption of best practices. The Renove program, is working with financial institutions to enable credit lines and funds that recognize the performance of partner ranchers.

LATAM Certification Project
The LATAM Certification project, in partnership with Imaflora (Institute for Forest and Agricultural Management and Certification) quantified the carbon balance and the intensity of emissions in 5 ranches in each country of operation, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Paraguay, and Uruguay, for a total of 25 ranches, 490 thousand hectares, and 232 thousand heads of cattle. The estimate of the intensity of emissions in global beef production, based on the analysis of more than 30 scientific papers, was 19.9 tons of CO2e per ton of beef produced. The 25 ranches supplying Minerva Foods are on average 44% below the aforementioned value.
Based on the carbon balance of the production system of each ranch, which includes the emissions and removals that occur on the property, three ranches can be considered carbon negative. The results were presented at the UN World Climate Conference (COP26) and can also be found on the Carbon on Track platform.
The ranches participating in this project have their carbon footprint certified with a seal granted by an independent organization with certification systems in more than 100 countries, based on internationally recognized standards, such as the GHG Protocol.
Through annual audits, it will be possible to monitor the activities of agriculture and cattle ranching, demonstrating improvements in the carbon balance of the ranches resulting from the implementation of low emission practices such as intensification, rotational systems, integrated systems, slaughter age reduction, amongst others.
In 2022, for the first time, Minerva exported certified carbon neutral meat, in other words, meat with emissions measured and audited in its production, processing and logistics, and offset by purchasing carbon credits from MyCarbon.
Furthermore, the Company is developing a study to define a plan to reduce emissions in its production units and ranches of its partner suppliers in order to continuously mitigate and/or offset the emissions from the production process.

Projeto MRV Agro
The MRV Agro project, in partnership with Embrapa (Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation), calculated the carbon balance of 23 ranches in Brazil (period from July 2020 to June 2021). The study covered 71,400 hectares and more than 250 thousand heads of cattle. The 23 participating farms supplied 12% of the volume of cattle purchased in Brazil in 2021. The initial results indicate that 22 of the ranches emit less than the national average for livestock activity and that ten of the ranches analyzed, sequestered more carbon than they emitted from good practices, being carbon negative. The results will be released soon.
In this partnership, AgroTag Carbon was adapted to support the work of technicians and managers in planning and monitoring the dynamics of management and land use in rural properties.
